THE DONKEY – A LOVE STORY FROM THE BUSH

“Hey Fred, do you know the difference between us Africans and you Europeans? You shower in the morning, we shower in the evening. You know – gives you a good sleep.”

That’s what Moyo the camp manager of a campsite in Zimbabwe said to us, and it stuck. Because he was right. A warm shower is comfort, calm, and the perfect way to end a day out in the bush.

Anyone traveling in Southern Africa will spend a lot of time camping – on private campsites or remote bush camps in the wilderness. Many of these places have simple but very clever ablution blocks. And this is where it comes in: the Donkey. A simple way to heat water – and we absolutely love it. Because after a dusty day in the bush, nothing feels better than standing under a warm shower.

WHAT IS A DONKEY BOILER

A Donkey is basically a simple hot water boiler heated by fire. The water usually comes from a rain barrel or a water tank.

The boiler itself is often welded from an old gas bottle and usually consists of:

a fire chamber
a chimney pipe
a cold water inlet
a hot water outlet
ideally, a pressure release valve

You light a fire underneath, wait around 30 minutes – depending on how well the Donkey is built – and hot water starts flowing to the shower. Just like at home, you mix hot and cold water until the temperature feels right. Simple, tough, and surprisingly effective.

A word on safety :

Most Donkeys have a pressure release valve – but not all of them do. With too much fire, you can build up serious pressure and overheat the tank. So: fire with feeling, not force. That way, the Donkey stays what it’s meant to be – reliable and safe.

SHOWER IN THE MORNING OR IN THE EVENING

With a bit of experience, you quickly learn when to fire up the Donkey. After about 30 minutes, the water is nicely warm. A bit later, it can get really hot. There are two classic options :

Morning :

Get up early, light the fire, then go back to bed. When you get up properly, a warm shower is waiting. Experienced campers prepare the wood and firelighters in the chamber the night before – then in the morning, all you need is a lighter.

Evening :

If you don’t want to get up early, you light the Donkey before going to bed. With a bit of practice, you stack the wood so it burns for a long time. The Donkey often holds the heat surprisingly well overnight. In the morning, you can shower with warm water without even adding cold.

Both work – and both feel like real luxury in the bush.

WOOD VERSUS WATER

Many camps provide firewood specifically for the Donkey. That wood is meant for heating water – not for your personal braai or barbecue night. If no extra wood is provided, it’s important to use it carefully, especially if you want a warm shower in the morning.

If you share the ablution block with other campers, it’s only fair to add more wood for the next person and to keep an eye on your water use. The amount of hot water is limited – being considerate is part of the deal.

FINAL THOUGHTS

There really is no reason to take a cold shower. Not in the bush, not after a long day outside.

DER DONKEY – EINE LIEBESGESCHICHTE AUS DEM BUSCH

„Hey Fred, weißt du, wo der Unterschied zwischen uns Afrikanern und euch Europäern ist? Ihr duscht morgens, wir duschen abends. You know – gives you a good sleep.“

Diesen Satz sagte uns Moyo der Campmanager eines Camps in Simbabwe, und er blieb hängen. Denn er trifft den Kern ziemlich gut. Warm duschen ist Luxus, Ruhe und ein perfekter Abschluss eines Tages draußen im Busch.

Wer im südlichen Afrika reist, campt oft auf privaten Campsites oder Bush camps in der Wildnis. Viele dieser Plätze haben einfache, aber geniale Ablution Blocks. Und genau hier kommt er ins Spiel: der Donkey. Eine simple Art, Wasser zu erhitzen – und wir lieben ihn. Denn nichts fühlt sich besser an, als nach einem staubigen Tag im Busch unter einer warmen Dusche zu stehen.

WAS IST EIN DONKEY BOILER

Ein Donkey ist im Grunde ein einfacher Warmwasserboiler, der mit Feuer beheizt wird. Das Wasser kommt meist aus einer Regentonne oder einem Wassertank.

Der Boiler selbst ist oft aus einer alten Gasflasche geschweißt und besteht aus:

einer Brennkammer für das Feuer
einem Kaminrohr
einer Kaltwasser-Zuleitung
einer Warmwasser-Ableitung
im besten Fall einem Druckventil

Man macht unten ein Feuer, wartet etwa 30 Minuten – je nach Bauweise – und schon fließt warmes Wasser zur Dusche. Ganz wie zu Hause mischt man dann warmes und kaltes Wasser, bis die Temperatur passt. Einfach, robust und erstaunlich effektiv.

Ein Wort zur Sicherheit :

Die meisten Donkeys haben ein Druckventil – aber nicht alle. Mit zu viel Feuer kann man den Boiler ordentlich unter Druck setzen und die Tonne hoch jagen. Also: Feuer mit Gefühl, nicht mit Gewalt. Dann bleibt der Donkey das, was er sein soll – zuverlässig und sicher.

MORGENS ODER ABENDS DUSCHEN

Mit etwas Erfahrung lernt man schnell, wann man den Donkey anfeuern muss. Nach rund 30 Minuten ist das Wasser angenehm warm, etwas später sogar richtig heiß. Es gibt zwei klassische Varianten:

Morgens :

Früh aufstehen, Feuer anzünden, nochmal hinlegen. Wenn man später aufsteht, wartet eine warme Dusche. Profis legen Holz und Anzünder schon am Abend bereit in die Kammer – dann reicht morgens ein Feuerzeug.

Abends :

Wer nicht früh raus will, zündet den Donkey vor dem Schlafengehen an. Mit etwas Übung stapelt man das Holz so, dass es lange brennt. Der Donkey hält die Wärme oft über Nacht erstaunlich gut. Morgens kann man dann duschen, ohne kaltes Wasser beimischen zu müssen.

Beides funktioniert – und beides fühlt sich nach echtem Luxus an.

HOLZ GEGEN WASSER

Viele Camps stellen Brennholz speziell für den Donkey zur Verfügung. Das Holz ist auch genau dafür gedacht – nicht für den eigenen Grillabend. Gibt es kein extra Holz, sollte man sparsam sein, besonders wenn man morgens duschen möchte.

Teilt man sich den Ablution Block mit anderen Campern, gilt natuerlich Holz nachlegen für die nächsten und den Wasserverbrauch im Blick behalten. Die Menge an warmem Wasser ist begrenzt – Rücksicht gehört einfach dazu.

FAZIT

Es gibt wirklich keinen Grund, kalt zu duschen. Nicht im Busch, nicht nach einem langen Tag draußen. Ein Donkey ist einfach, ehrlich und funktioniert.
