WHAT'S UP EVERYONE
THIS IS US
Hi, it’s Fred and Tatjana here – for those of you who haven’t followed us from the start or just didn’t know.
We are a married couple who, over a few espresso martinis and a lifelong dream, decided to ship our car to Cape Town. From there, our goal was to drive all the way from Cape Town to Nairobi and eventually complete the circle back in Cape Town.
And guess what? We did it.
Definitely an adventure of a lifetime.
Fred is a passionate photographer and always has his camera within reach to capture the magic of the moment. Tatjana comes from the corporate world and decided to take a break – to pause, breathe, and live a different kind of life for a while.
With full hearts and a head full of inspiration, we try to bring some Africa feeling across the screen and straight into your home.

24 YEARS, 21 COUNTRIES ...
We travelled the whole time with our Defender. Fred has owned it for 24 years and had already taken some solo trips before it was fully converted and Tatjana joined the party.
Our Defender is fully equipped – you can sleep inside or in our rooftop tent. We know Defenders are special and need lots of love, but you might be surprised how well it performed over these 9 months of travel.
It probably likes Africa just as much as we do.

GRAVEL AND SALT
A name that’s about us – but also about something bigger.
Gravel & Salt is our journey, our impressions, and the adventure of a lifetime.
The name reflects who we are: “Gravel” stands for our love of overlanding, “Salt” for Fred’s cooking – which Tatjana truly enjoys. Good food, wild places, amazing people, and game drives – the perfect mix for an unforgettable journey.
What touched us most: many of you wrote to say our posts made you feel like you were back on the road again. That means the world to us.
