Hey there, it's Tatjana and Fred from Gravel and Salt!

We're here to introduce ourselves and share what our blog is all about.

... the voice behind our posts. In my late twenties, I absolutely love hitting the road with my husband Fred.

Overlanding, for us, is all about disconnecting in the most beautiful remote places, where the real gift is losing connection and truly living in the moment.

I've always dreamt of van life, and it was Fred who took me on my first trip to Sardegna at the start of our relationship. We haven't stopped exploring since. As the passenger princess, my role involves curating the music, setting up the dining table, mixing drinks, and, well, not taking myself too seriously.

Fun fact: My surfboard doesn't fit our car anymore

He wears many hats – behind the wheel, he is the designated driver navigating our routes. In the camping kitchen, he is a chef, cooking up something almost daily.

Fred is known for his humor, sometimes at my expense. Fred’s sense for beauty and exploration, combined with patience, usually lands us in super nice camp spots.

Fun fact: Fred may not have explicitly mentioned to me that with a Defender, you usually see one workshop per trip from the inside.

TRACKS, IMPRESSIONS, FLAVOURS

Together we're excited to share our overlanding world with you. It's all about tracks, experiences, and flavors, and we can't wait to tell you all about it.

Since 2017, Fred's been cruising through Europe and Africa in our Defender. I joined later, and our travels within Europe led to a big decision – a long trip to Africa.

Over a few too many espresso martinis, we decided to make overlanding a full-time gig.

Fred proposed in Africa, so going back was a no-brainer. We love the peace of remote travel and disconnecting from the world. It's a once-in-a-lifetime trip, and we've saved up.

MAKING IT WORTH YOUR WHILE

But, we also wanted to share our journey and make it worth your while. We've got an Instagram channel for cool visuals, a blog for gear and travel info, and a shop for prints and stickers to spruce up your space.

We're not just about asking for support; we want to add value. Our content will recommend tracks, share hidden spots, and spill the beans on local cooking, so you can get inspired at home or plan your own adventure.

Planning hasn't been as easy as we thought. We'll share not just the fun stuff but also the challenges we face. So, our journey is fueled by passion, love for remote travel, and a desire to share.

UNSER OVERLAND ABENTEUER: GRAVEL&SALT

Hey, wir sind Tatjana und Fred von Gravel & Salt!

Wir möchten uns kurz vorstellen und euch zeigen, worum es auf unserem Blog geht.

TATJANA HIER

... die Stimme hinter unseren Beiträgen. Ende zwanzig liebe ich es, gemeinsam mit meinem Mann Fred unterwegs zu sein.

Overlanding bedeutet für uns, in den schönsten abgelegenen Orten bewusst abzuschalten – dort, wo der größte Luxus darin liegt, keine Verbindung zu haben und den Moment wirklich zu leben.

Ich habe schon immer vom Vanlife geträumt, und Fred hat mich gleich zu Beginn unserer Beziehung auf meine erste Reise nach Sardinien mitgenommen. Seitdem haben wir nicht mehr aufgehört, unterwegs zu sein. Als selbsternannte Passenger Princess kümmere ich mich um die Musik, decke den Tisch, mixe Drinks – und nehme mich selbst dabei nicht allzu ernst.

Fun Fact: Mein Surfboard passt inzwischen leider nicht mehr ins Auto.

UND DAS IST FREDERIK

... die andere (oder vielleicht bessere?) Hälfte von Gravel & Salt.

Er trägt viele Hüte – hinter dem Steuer ist er unser Fahrer und navigiert uns zuverlässig über unsere Routen. In der Campingküche ist er der Koch und zaubert fast täglich etwas auf den Tisch.

Fred ist bekannt für seinen Humor, manchmal auch auf meine Kosten. Sein Gespür für schöne Orte und Entdeckungen, kombiniert mit viel Geduld, bringt uns am Ende meistens an richtig großartige Campspots.

Fun Fact: Fred hat mir vielleicht nicht ganz so deutlich gesagt, dass man mit einem Defender auf jeder Reise mindestens einmal von innen eine Werkstatt sieht.

Gemeinsam freuen wir uns darauf, unsere Overlanding-Welt mit euch zu teilen. Es geht um Routen, Erlebnisse und Geschmäcker – und wir können es kaum erwarten, euch davon zu erzählen.

Seit 2017 ist Fred mit unserem Defender in Europa und Afrika unterwegs. Ich bin etwas später dazugekommen, und unsere gemeinsamen Reisen durch Europa haben schließlich zu einer großen Entscheidung geführt – einer langen Reise nach Afrika.

Nach ein paar (zu vielen) Espresso Martinis haben wir beschlossen, Overlanding zu unserem Vollzeitprojekt zu machen.

Fred hat mir in Afrika einen Antrag gemacht, also war klar, dass wir zurückkehren würden. Wir lieben die Ruhe des abgelegenen Reisens und das bewusste Abschalten von der Welt. Es ist eine Reise, die man nur einmal im Leben macht – und dafür haben wir gespart.
